One of the most popular posts on my non-blog is Dudley Moore’s witty parody of the vocal music of Benjamin Britten. Well, today we see and hear the real thing.
I saw Jon Vickers as Peter Grimes at the Met in the mid-1970s. One of the great opera-going experiences of my life, with the bizarre note that it played to a house that was at least one-third empty.

Simply an astounding performance.
I am going to Opera North’s Grimes in December in Newcastle, and given the unanimous 5 star reviews in the press, am very excited about it. It is a favourite opera, and Britten’s use of the music to emphasise Grimes as a complete outsider is nothing short of genius.
December can’t come fast enough.
