Barbara Cook, who we saw in yesterday’s medley with the late Robert Goulet, celebrated her eightieth birthday on October 25.
Here she is in one of her best-known roles, as the original Marian the Librarian in The Music Man (no, Lennon and McCartney didn’t write this …):
Judging from the original cast album, Dorothy Collins had an edge of madness and desperation missing from Cook’s portrayal of Sally in the all-star concert performance of Stephen Sondheim’s Follies. But although Cook never acted the role, I still prefer her version of this:
