Birgit Nilsson (1918-2005) was known for the title role in Puccini’s Turandot, the only non-German role in her standard repertoire.
Both the clip and the picture are from my favorite opera website, Parterre Box. The miner’s lamp worn over the Wagnerian headgear was Nilsson’s comment on the underlit opera stagings of the era.
I think this is from one of her Bell Telephone Hour appearances from the 1960s. Get a load of how the stairs are painted to look like the train of her dress, and how she gestures as if she’s wearing the long fingernails …
