Baptiste triumphs in his first starring role, but backstage things are a bit frenetic:
A photo of Baptiste and Garance performing Les amants de la lune is on Lucy’s bedroom wall, in my original screenplay, Tabula Rasa.
Jean-Louis Barrault (1910-1994), who plays Baptiste Deburau, studied mime under Etienne Decroux, who played Baptiste’s father in Les Enfants du Paradis. In 1948 he quit the Comédie Française and started his own theatre with his wife, actress Madeleine Renaud. He sided with the rebellious students and strikers in the May 1968 riots and was removed as the director of the Theater de France.
